A great strategy to deal with low back discomfort is to create more strength and mobility through a nice Yin + Yang sequence.
Yin + Yang Yoga is a yoga practice where both active yoga and passive yoga are joined to create a complete system of movement that supports maximal strength and mobility, nourishment for joints and bone growth.
Yang movements may include core integration poses that utilize the three dimensions of the core belt, sun salutations to warm-up and lubricate the whole body, standing poses, and backbends. These more active poses will help you explore the range of movement that you have in your spine and hip joints and to develop a broad knowledge base about where you experience strengths and weaknesses. Yoga is a unitive practice; in other words, you learn by connecting to yourself as you are moving through the poses because your attention + intention are focused on what you are doing.
Yin movements help further range of movement, create deeper joint nourishment and a more complete understanding of where is your appropriate edge in any dimension. The poses are held for minutes rather than seconds and so you have time to openly examine and experience what is present and true. Yin Yoga is great at reversing the unwitting affects of immobility (spider webs of connective tissue meant to reinforce what you do most…SIT !). The combination of duration of the poses + finding your edge breaks through all of the built-up connective tissue. The result of clearing the channels for your energy to flow is less discomfort and pain. And relief! Yin poses are mostly seated poses and will might include stretches for the back body, sides and front body.
Yin + Yang Yoga is a great complement to your regular active fitness practice whether it is yoga, running, or cycling.
